Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

Welcome to Year 4’s website pages. Here you can find photographs of the Year 4 classes in action; copies of letters we send home; useful websites and examples of our wonderful work. Don’t forget that every week Mathletics homework is set – pupils need to log in to complete their homework before they can play any further Mathletics games.

All Year 4 homework is set on a Monday, to be completed by the following Monday.

The children have made a splendid start to Year 4. They have settled well into their new classes, embraced their learning and thrown themselves into their first topic. The whole school started the term by looking at Coralie Bickford-Smith’s beautiful book ‘The Fox and the Star’. Year 4 pupils have used art, ICT, English and maths skills to explore the book in imaginative ways.

We have planned many lovely learning opportunities in this first half term, starting with our exciting trip to Mary Arden’s farm in week two of term. Watch this space for photos of the day. Our first Year 4 topic is entitled "Much Ado About The Tudors" – which links beautifully with our first history and English topic on Tudor England and William Shakespeare. Our first science topic exploring is exploring living things and food chains. Our first maths unit of work looks at Roman Numerals, rounding and place value, followed by addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

In PE, pupils will be taught by our new GoPro team of sports coaches for their Outdoor PE lessons. Classes also have swimming lesson this term (see letters) instead of Indoor PE. Our Indoor PE lessons of Tudor dance will take place when classes are not swimming.

See the Powerpoint on this page entitled ‘Acquaintance Evening’ with more details about the start of Year 4.

Please keep making regular visits to check out what Year 4 are up to!

Year 4 - Meet the Team!

On Thursday 14th June, Year 4 went on an exciting trip to Sulgrave Manor. On our arrival, the children dressed up as Tudors and learnt how to greet one another. Whilst on our tour of the manor house and gardens, the children tasted herbs, learnt about working as a ‘spit boy’, discovered why babies were hung on the wall and much, much more! After a Tudor lunch, the children and teachers were immersed in Tudor life; learning songs and dances as well as playing some Tudor games. Many of the children particularly enjoyed skipping with Mr Collier and Miss Steele!

Year 4 were transported back in time to the 16th Century. They had a fantastic day at Sulgrave Manor, in Oxfordshire, exploring further what life was like in Tudor times. They considered how rich and poor people lived, learning more about the houses, gardens, toys and games, food, jobs and conventions of the time. The children even looked the part, dressing up in Tudor clothes. It was a super experience; bringing to life the learning they had completed at school. Year 4 took one of our governors, Mr. Hawke, with them and he had a great time too; particularly commending the children’s behaviour and interest in learning. Well done, Year 4!

Designing a Windmill

Four students from Warwick University came to Year 4 to run a workshop based on designing a windmill. The children were put in teams of 6 and had to design and make a windmill. The children had virtual money to 'buy' items such as straws, cardboard and paper. They could also trade amongst themselves. Each team's windmill was tested at the end of the morning and the winning team were rewarded with chocolate!
