Mathematics is a core subject of the National Curriculum.

At St. Margaret’s mathematics lessons enable children to gain knowledge, key skills and understanding in all areas of mathematics – number (including, place value, calculations, fractions, decimals and percentages), measurement (properties of shapes, position and direction), geometry, statistics, algebra and ratio & proportion.

We aim to provide the children with a broad range of activities which allow the children to apply known facts whilst making links to other areas of the curriculum and real-life situations; building their confidence and enjoyment in the use of mathematics at school and other real life situations.

In line with the statements below taken from the National Curriculum (2013), the mathematics curriculum at St. Margaret’s aims to ensure that all pupils:

• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

• reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

• can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
